By Belize Live News Staff: Police have charged a 15 year old boy following an investigation into the alleged rape of a five year old child in Orange Walk.
The case began after the five year old was taken to the Orange Walk Police Station by his mother and an allegation of sexual assault was reported.
According to police, the alleged incident occurred inside a home in Orange Walk Town.
Investigators recorded a statement from the child in his mother’s presence and later visited the reported scene with Scenes of Crime personnel.
The child was subsequently taken to the Northern Regional Hospital, where police say a medical examination documented injuries.
Investigators then attempted to locate the teenage relative named in the complaint.
Police later received information that the teenager was attending school in Belize City.
Orange Walk officers visited the school and located the 15 year old.
He was detained and taken to the Queen Street Police Station before later being transported with his mother to Orange Walk.
Police say the teenager was informed of the allegation, cautioned and advised of his constitutional rights. He chose to remain silent.
Following an interview conducted with the appropriate adults present, the case documents were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Police subsequently obtained a warrant and formally arrested and charged the teenager with rape of a child.
The identities of both minors have been withheld.
