Cordel Hyde is running the country while John Briceño is in New York for the UN General Assembly. Speaking to 7 News after a Central Bank keynote, he was asked about the cost of living.
What came back was more candid than most ministers offer.
Hyde said Cabinet, ministers, representatives and ministers of state have reached a point where they need to look at their own allowances.
“I think we have to really, really put some dent in our allowances to show people that we are living in the same space and we want and we understand what is happening out here.”
He reached for a proverb to make the point about timing. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.
He also named the risk directly. If government does nothing, people will keep saying it is disconnected and out of touch, and he does not want that stain on the administration.
Hyde pointed to the bus subsidy as something already done, then said plainly that it is not enough.
