By Belize Live News Staff: A 22 year old fisherman from Chunox Village has reported that he came under gunfire while driving along a dirt road near cane fields in the Orange Walk District.
Police say the incident allegedly occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on September 17 near Trinidad Village.
The fisherman told police that he had been fishing with two friends and later drove away from the river area to purchase supplies.
He said he encountered three men near the road, including one dressed in a blue uniform resembling a Customs officer and two others wearing camouflage clothing.
One of the men was allegedly carrying a black rifle.
The fisherman said the men did not signal him to stop and that he continued driving because he felt unsafe.
He then alleged that one of the men opened fire on his red pickup truck with a handgun.
The fisherman said he felt a burning sensation in his left foot as he drove away.
Police later recovered five expended shell casings from the area and documented multiple bullet holes in the vehicle.
The pickup also had two flat front tires.
Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
