By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has submitted a nomination for UNESCO’s 2026 Memory of the World Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean, joining a record field of submissions from across the region.
UNESCO announced on September 7 that its regional committee received 87 nominations from participating countries, a 21 percent increase over the number of proposals received in 2025.
Among those submissions is one nomination from Belize.
The initiative forms part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, which focuses on protecting and promoting documentary heritage of historical and cultural importance.
This year’s participation spans 23 countries, demonstrating growing regional interest in preserving historical records and ensuring important documentary collections receive greater recognition.
Belize is among several Caribbean countries represented in the 2026 process. Dominica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago each submitted one nomination, while Jamaica is involved in a joint nomination with the United Kingdom and Canada.
Latin American countries account for many of the submissions, with Brazil leading the field with 18 nominations.
The next major step will come around November, when the nominations are scheduled to be evaluated at the 26th Annual Meeting of the Regional Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme.
UNESCO has not yet announced the exact date or location of that meeting.
The information released by UNESCO identifies Belize as having one nomination but does not provide the name or details of the Belizean documentary collection submitted for consideration.
