Stop and consider what that means.
He was born in 1924, when this country was still British Honduras. Belize would not become self governing for another 40 years. Independence was 57 years away. Most of the roads that connect this country did not exist yet.
He has lived through hurricanes that reshaped whole towns, through the rise and fall of industries in the north, and through every prime minister this country has had.
And here he is, standing among his flowers on his birthday.
Men like Mr. Copo hold the memory of a Belize the rest of us only read about. Every year we still have him is a year that history stays alive in a way no book can match.
