By Belize Live News Staff: The education link between Belize and Taiwan is bigger than most people realise.
Latest figures show 299 Belizean students are enrolled in Taiwan for the 2025 to 2026 academic year. Of those, 231 are pursuing degrees and 68 are studying Mandarin.
Those numbers came up on Friday when Minister of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management Henry Charles Usher met with Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Education Liu Kuo-wei.
Liu thanked Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Cooperation and Development Fund for the scholarships that make those studies possible, and praised the University of Belize for its partnerships with Taiwanese institutions.
The conversation also went the other way. Liu said Taiwan wants to send its own young people to Belize through the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative Program, which places Taiwanese youth as interns with international organisations abroad.
Jamie Lee Usher, president of the Belize Robotics Association, was part of the meeting and discussed her work promoting robotics education here.
The delegation is in Taiwan studying civil servant training and disaster response.
Would you send your child to study in Taiwan?
