Speednet deal stopped, Leader of the Opposition credits Belizeans for standing up

By Belize Live News Staff: Political messages are written for the moment and the record at once. Tracy Panton’s Sunday address does both.

The moment is the Speednet collapse, the biggest citizen-driven reversal in recent memory, and the opposition leader wraps her arms fully around it. Her message thanks the Chamber, the unions, the NGOs, the evangelicals, the Council of Churches, the independent media and every protesting citizen, the exact wall that stood for two weeks until Cabinet folded. Her refrain is built to be quoted: We see you. We hear you. We appreciate you.

The record is subtler. Tucked into that honour roll sits “our great United Democratic Party,” placing the UDP inside a victory that was, by every account, led by the social partners rather than any political party. It is fair crediting, the opposition did stand with the coalition, and it is also smart politics: a leader steadying a divided party by attaching it to the year’s most popular outcome. The same week, veteran UDP figure Alberto August publicly declared he is done saving parties and wants to save Belize from politicians. Panton’s message reads, in part, like the answer: the party was with the people all along.

Her pivot is the tell for what comes next. Corruption and abuse of office, she warns, remain unaddressed, and the vigilance that stopped a telecom deal must now demand accountability “until those responsible are held to account.” The Speednet playbook, business, labour, church and citizen pressure, is being loaded for the next fight.

Whether the coalition follows a party’s banner is another question. The social partners won by belonging to no one. Panton’s Sunday message is a bid to make that energy feel at home on her side of the House.
