Most family businesses die with the founder. The Bedran sisters had other plans.

By Belize Live News Staff: There is a saying in business that the first generation builds, the second maintains, and the third loses it all. San Ignacio Resort Hotel’s 50th anniversary is a running argument against that curse, and the latest chapter honours the women who broke it: the four Bedran sisters.

Escandar Bedran built the hotel in 1976 out of the ashes of his twice-burned Stork Club. He and his wife, married in September 1953, raised seven children, Terry, Nazle, Mariam, Abdala, Escandar, Amin and Paulita, and when he retired in 1996, he did not sell to the highest bidder or hand the keys to outside managers. He gave the hotel to his daughters, with one instruction: continue the legacy.

Nearly three decades later, the sisters have delivered. The hilltop property survived the handover that sinks most family firms, grew through every economic season since, and remains what it has always been, a Belizean family institution with the Bedran crest over the door, in an industry where foreign ownership is increasingly the norm.

That endurance is its own kind of heritage. Buildings can be rebuilt after fires, as Escandar proved twice. Keeping a family’s hands on the wheel for fifty years takes something rarer.

Raise a glass to the four Bedran sisters. Their father built the only jungle in town. They made sure it stayed in the family.
