She hit him with her cellphone. She bit down on his finger. She fought through a beating, a knife at her throat, and the worst night of her life, and in the end, she broke free and ran. A 21-year-old Orange Walk District woman survived a knifepoint rape on Saturday night, and the man she named, her former common-law husband, is now the subject of a police search that stretches to the border and beyond.
The Belize Police Department reports that the attack began at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at her mother’s home, where she lives. She was outside talking with a male friend, according to her report, when the man appeared, dragged her into her room, threw her on the bed, and began beating her as he tore at her clothing.
Her resistance, the cellphone strike, the bitten finger, bought her no mercy. He dragged her by the hair to the backyard, she reported, put a pocket knife to her neck, and promised to stab her if she screamed. Then came the abandoned house nearby, more blows, the blade at her throat, and the sentence that survivors of intimate partner violence know as the darkest warning there is: if she would not be with him, she would be with no one else. He then raped her.
Her escape came on the way back. Dragged toward her mother’s yard, she wrenched herself free and ran for help, and the man fled into the night. Bleeding heavily, her face badly injured, she was rushed by her sister to the Northern Regional Hospital, where doctors stitched the wounds near her eye and completed a sexual assault evidence kit, now sealed in the chain of custody and in police hands.
She has asked for court action. The scene in San Felipe Village has been processed, witness statements are pending, and police have a 29-year-old village man listed as wanted. He was not at his residence when officers checked on Sunday, and information received indicates he is hiding on the Mexican side of the border. He is not named here, as no charge has yet been laid, and the allegations await the court.
A border line may delay a case. It does not close one. The evidence is collected, the survivor is standing, and the search continues.
