One last wave crosses as July ends, fair weekend ahead

By Belize Live News Staff: July saves its last umbrella morning for the exit. A weak tropical wave crosses Belize today, dampening central and northern areas through the morning hours, but the parting gift sits right behind it: a mainly fair weekend to welcome August.

The National Meteorological Service reports moist and unstable conditions as the wave approaches, with cloudy spells today and partly cloudy skies tonight. The showers and thunderstorms favour the centre and north this morning before the activity winds down to isolated by afternoon, meaning the worst of the wet clears before the day is done.

The water demands the most respect today. A small craft caution is in effect for gusty winds and locally rough seas, especially near the heavy showers, with easterly winds of 10 to 20 knots and waves running 4 to 7 feet. Smaller vessels should pick their moments carefully or sit this one out.

The temperatures hold their familiar line. Inland areas reach 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) before easing to 73 (23 Celsius). The coast tops out at 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) with a warm low of 82 (28 Celsius), while the hills peak at 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) and cool to 68 (20 Celsius).

The tropics close the month the way Belize likes them, quiet, with no cyclone formation expected in the region over the next 48 hours.

And then comes the payoff. Saturday and Saturday night bring mainly fair weather with only isolated showers, handing the first weekend of August sunshine to work with, for the beach runs, the yard work, and everything the wet morning postponed.

As for the tides, today’s highs fall at 10:48 AM and 11:47 PM, with lows at 5:50 PM and 5:26 AM tomorrow. The sun sets this evening at 6:26 PM and rises again at 5:32 AM. This forecast was prepared by forecaster Tareek Matthews.
