By Belize Live News Staff: The hands that held a wild jaguar cub have now signed for the consequences. Ruben Stoll has been charged under Belize’s Wildlife Protection Act and has paid a BZ$1,000 fine, about US$500, closing the case that began with the handling and molestation of a jaguar cub in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
The Belize Forest Department announced the outcome in an official statement, noting that following the incident, Stoll voluntarily returned to Belize and surrendered himself to the authorities, a detail that says he had left the country before facing the matter, and that his return brought the case to its end.
The department used the moment to say what needed saying, plainly. Wildlife is not a pet. Not a photo prop. Not a tourist attraction. Touching, handling, or disturbing wild animals endangers the animal and the human alike, and Belizean law backs that principle with teeth: the Wildlife Protection Act defines hunting to include molesting wildlife by any method, and shields protected species, obviously immature animals, and mothers with young. A jaguar cub, the infant of the national animal, sits at the very heart of that protection.
“No one is above the laws of Belize,” the department stated, welcoming visitors to the country’s extraordinary biodiversity while reminding all that admiration comes with responsibility.
Whether the price matched the offence is the question Belizeans will chew on. One thousand dollars for laying hands on a protected jaguar cub will strike plenty as a bargain, though the fine reflects the law as it stands, and if the public wants heavier deterrents for wildlife offences, that argument goes to the lawmakers, not the rangers.
What should outlast the debate is the lesson, delivered in the department’s own closing words, worth printing on every trailhead in the country: observe wildlife from a safe distance. Admire it. Photograph it. But never touch it, harass it, or interfere with it.
The cub belongs to the forest. The forest belongs to Belize. And the rules belong to everyone.
