80,000 signatures demand a World Cup final do-over

80,000 signatures demand a World Cup final do-over

By Belize Live News Staff: Grief has five stages, and Argentine football fandom has apparently added a sixth: the Change.org petition.

Days after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory in the World Cup final, a campaign launched by Argentine fan Gisela Sanchez is demanding FIFA replay the match, and more than 80,200 people have signed at the time of writing. The petition takes aim at Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, questioning his performance and calling on FIFA to review the decisions taken during the final, which the author claims heavily shaped the outcome.

Every heartbroken fan base deserves its outlet, and the final gave Argentina supporters plenty to chew on, six cards, Enzo Fernández’s sending off, and a post-match scuffle that summed up the night’s temperature. But the neutral’s scoreboard is unkind to the conspiracy: Spain owned 68 percent of the ball, fired 20 shots, and pinned Argentina so thoroughly that the champions managed zero shots on target in 120 minutes. If the referee stole anything, he apparently stole Argentina’s attack too.

And then there is the poetry of it all. Cast your mind back to December 2022, when Argentina beat France in that unforgettable final, and it was French fans who flooded Change.org demanding a replay, collecting hundreds of thousands of signatures. Argentine fans, mid-celebration, answered with a counter-petition of their own, cheekily asking France to stop crying, and it went viral worldwide. Four years on, the universe has arranged a perfect symmetry, and somewhere in Paris, a French fan is surely drafting the reply.

The cold reality: FIFA has never replayed a World Cup final and never will on the strength of a petition. Spain are champions, the record is written, and the only replays coming are the highlight reels.

Still, for the Jewel’s blue and white army, perhaps there is comfort in the company of 80,000 fellow mourners. Sign it, share it, laugh at it, whatever helps. The heart heals on its own schedule.

So tell the truth, Belize: are you signing, or is it time to let go? Let us know in the comments.
