Mother flees with children before late-night attack at home

By Belize Live News Staff: It was 1:00 a.m. when the door of a San Lorenzo Area home became a trap. An Orange Walk Town mother says she was locked out of her own house, dragged back inside, thrown down, beaten, and choked by her partner, all while her two young sons, just 13 and 6, were present, and police have a man in custody pending charges.

The Belize Police Department reports that the 32-year-old woman came forward on Saturday, July 17, 2026, describing an ordeal that began when her common-law husband arrived home in the early hours under the influence of alcohol and turned aggressive.

Her account traces a night of escalating fear. When her elder boy slipped outside and she followed to check on him, the man locked the door behind her, leaving her pleading to be let back in. The moment he opened it, she reported, he seized her blouse and hauled her inside with both hands.

She gathered her children and tried to leave. He caught her arm, she told police, and flung her onto the verandah, where she hit the floor. Then came blows to her head, several of them, before he forced her back into the house, turned the lock, and wrapped his hands around her throat.

Somehow, she reached the police. Officers detained the man on the spot and took him to the station.

A doctor has certified her injuries as harm, and she has requested court action. The 32-year-old Trial Farm Village man remains detained pending charges, and in keeping with standard practice, he is not being named until formally charged.

Behind the police language sits a mother who fought to get her boys out of harm’s way, and two children who saw what no child should. To anyone living a version of this story: the police, and trusted support services, are a call away. Reaching out is not weakness. It is the way out.
