By Belize Live News Staff: A Guinea Grass Village woman is out of a bicycle and full of frustration, after a man allegedly stole her ride from her front door at midnight, then showed up the next evening to insist he didn’t do it, before promising to bring the bike back. It has never returned.
According to the Belize Police Department, 31-year-old Shani Hernandez, an assistant cook of the village, reported that she left work on her bicycle late on Sunday, July 5, 2026, arriving home around midnight. She parked the bicycle near her front door, where she always leaves it.
About fifteen minutes later, Hernandez heard her yard dog barking. Peeping through her window, she saw a man about twenty yards away exiting her yard, pushing her bicycle. She shouted at him, and the man glanced back at her, ran off, jumped on the bicycle, and rode away. Hernandez told police there was sufficient light to recognize him, that she regularly sees him around the village, and that she knows exactly who he is.
Then came the odd sequel. The following evening, Hernandez reported, the same man approached her at her home and told her he was not the one who stole the bike. When she replied that she had clearly seen him and knows him quite well, he told her he knew where the bicycle was and would bring it back to her. The bicycle has not been returned.
The stolen bicycle is a purple 24-inch male frame Hurricane Beach Cruiser with the right handle wrapped in black tape, valued at $528. Hernandez requested court action, and a statement was recorded.
Police have named two persons as wanted in connection with the matter. As neither has been detained or charged, their identities are being withheld pending charges.
Anyone who has seen the bicycle or has information is asked to contact the Guinea Grass Sub Station or the Orange Walk police.
