By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party is heading to the streets, and Opposition Leader Tracy Panton wants the whole country to come along. The party will stage a protest march and rally in Belize City this Friday, stepping off from UDP Headquarters and ending at Battlefield Park downtown.
According to Panton, the demonstration is about far more than party colours. She frames it around three concerns she says touch every home in the country, the procurement controversy at the Ministry of Defense, the surge in crime and violence, and the relentless cost of living. In her words, the moment calls for action, and she is urging citizens to show up and make their voices heard.
On the procurement matter, the Opposition Leader believes the public has seen only a fraction of the story. She described the information released so far as “just the tip of the iceberg,” with more still unfolding, and took aim at the Prime Minister’s handling of it, calling his dismissiveness “deeply disconcerting.”
Her prescription is a full, independent forensic audit, and not one limited to the ministries and departments already in the spotlight. Panton argues the problem is systemic, warning bluntly that “we can’t normalize corruption.” Those assertions reflect the Opposition’s position, and it bears noting that the matters at issue are the subject of an ongoing audit, with no conclusions yet reached.
Crucially, Panton is pitching Friday’s event as a national movement rather than a UDP affair. While the party is organising the march, she extended an open invitation to unions, civil society groups, the churches, and every ordinary Belizean to take part and lend visibility to the issues. “This is not just a political rally,” she insisted.
The government has previously said it is addressing questions of accountability through established processes, including the audit now in progress.
Come Friday, the streets of Belize City will reveal just how deeply Panton’s call to action has resonated.
