By Belize Live News Staff: A routine late-night patrol in the Orange Walk District ended with a man being charged for drug possession.
The Belize Police Department reports that in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026, at about 12:15 a.m., officers patrolling the Philip Goldson Highway noticed a man walking toward Carmelita Village who appeared to be behaving suspiciously. Officers stopped him and advised that he would be searched, asking whether he had anything illegal on him. According to police, he said no.
During the search, officers reported finding a small zip lock bag with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine in the man’s pocket, followed by a second bag inside his wallet. He was informed of the alleged offence, cautioned, and taken into custody.
At the Orange Walk Police Station, the man was identified as 27-year-old Maximiliano Xujur, a carpenter of Carmelita Village. The suspected drugs were weighed at 0.28 grams before being sealed and labelled for evidence.
Police went on to charge Xujur with possession of controlled drugs. He opted to remain silent after being cautioned.
It is worth noting that Xujur, like anyone facing a charge, is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty before the court.
