Brothers united in the fight: men's health takes centre stage

By Belize Live News Staff: Men’s health was front and centre in Belize City, as the Belize Cancer Society hosted its 3rd Annual Men’s Forum, rallying men and boys around a powerful message of taking charge of their well-being.

Held at the Belize Civic Center under the theme “From Awareness to Action: Brothers United in the Fight,” the forum formed part of Men’s Health Awareness Month. It drew a wide cross-section of Belizeans, from healthcare professionals and government representatives to cancer survivors, community leaders, and men and boys eager to learn.

The opening ceremony set an inspiring tone, with remarks from Belize Cancer Society President Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow and Dr. Karen Roberts, Advisor for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health. A heartfelt testimony from cancer survivor Mr. Earl Jones reminded those present of the very real stakes, while Vice Secretary Ms. Monica Tucker offered a welcome and Archbishop Phillip Wright led a prayer.

The day was packed with practical, potentially life-saving information. Dr. Irvin Anthony Gabourel underscored the importance of early detection and screening for prostate and colorectal cancers. Dr. Jorge Polanco looked ahead to the future of men’s health services in Belize, calling for measurable national goals. In a candid session on mental health, Dr. Claudina Elington Cayetano urged men to break the stigma around asking for help, and Mr. Grayson Ewing spoke to the power of exercise, good nutrition, and healthy living in keeping chronic diseases at bay.

Rounding out the programme was a thought-provoking panel discussion, “Brothers in the Fight, Families Fighting Together,” featuring Dr. Hugh Sanchez and Mr. Francis “Cisco” Woods, followed by a lively question-and-answer session. Attendees also explored health exhibits and resource booths offering guidance and services.

The Belize Cancer Society made clear that the work does not end when the forum does. It is calling on businesses, schools, churches, employers, and community groups to keep the momentum going, so that more Belizean men feel empowered to seek preventive care, get checked early, and support one another. The goal is simple but vital, a Belize where men live healthier, longer lives.
