Belizeans bring the flag and the pride to the World Cup

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize may not have a team on the field, but you would not know it from the stands.

A group of proud Belizeans was spotted at the World Cup, decked out in red, white and blue and flying the national flag as they walked into the stadium with their heads held high. The image, shared online and captured by a tournament volunteer, shows the group beaming as they carried the Belize flag into the venue, flying the colours of the Jewel on one of the biggest stages in world sport.

And it seems they are not the only ones. As the World Cup rolls on, more and more Belizeans appear to be making the journey to soak up the atmosphere of the world’s biggest football tournament, carrying the flag and the country’s name with them wherever they go.

For many back home, the sight stirs a familiar dream. With the World Cup now expanded and bigger than ever, the question keeps coming up. When will it be Belize’s turn? Plenty of Belizeans would love nothing more than to see their own Jaguars walk out onto that pitch one day, and many believe it is time for the Jewel to set its sights on a place at the global showpiece.

For now, there is plenty of football to enjoy, and Belizean fans will have their eyes on a packed schedule. Today’s fixtures include Argentina against Austria, France against Iraq, Norway against Senegal, and Jordan against Algeria, with supporters across the country sure to be tuning in.

Whether cheering from the stands abroad or from home in Belize, one thing is clear. Belizeans love their football, and the dream of one day seeing the Jewel at the World Cup is alive and well.
