By Belize Live News Staff: While lawmakers ultimately agreed on a US$23.5 million loan for early childhood development and female empowerment, the House debate ended with a tense exchange between Prime Minister John Briceño and Opposition Leader Tracy Panton.
The disagreement unfolded shortly after Panton left her seat during the Prime Minister’s response to take what she described as an urgent phone call from her mother.
Briceño used the moment to criticize the Opposition Leader, suggesting she could learn more by remaining in the chamber during the debate.
Panton quickly responded, explaining that the call was urgent before firing back that the Prime Minister was “thin skin.”
The exchange escalated as Briceño accused the Opposition of selective learning and revisited past disagreements over major financial initiatives, including the Blue Bond transaction and government borrowing.
Despite the political sparring, both sides supported the loan motion, which will fund improvements in early childhood education, childcare services and programs aimed at increasing opportunities for women.
The approval means Belize will now move forward with one of its largest recent investments focused on early childhood development and female economic empowerment, even as debates continue over government transparency and financial management.
