By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño believes one of the major reasons Belize is experiencing increased social violence is the breakdown of parenting and discipline within families.
Speaking on recent violent incidents, including the murders that have shocked the nation in recent weeks, Briceño said while the government continues investing in law enforcement and crime fighting efforts, many of today’s violent acts stem from problems that begin at home.
According to the Prime Minister, the country has seen a gradual erosion of parental authority and community involvement in raising children.
Briceño reflected on his own childhood, recalling a time when parents, neighbors and community members worked together to discipline young people and ensure they stayed on the right path.
He argued that many of the challenges Belize faces today cannot be solved solely by police officers or tougher laws, but require stronger family structures and greater parental involvement.
The Prime Minister also pointed to community-based parenting initiatives as one possible solution to help families better guide children and reduce future violence.
