Maria Bonilla speaks from the heart at Belmopan rally; He spent 14 years studying medicine just for someone to take it all away

By Belize Live News Staff: One of the most emotional moments at Monday night’s justice rally for slain doctor Naum Bonilla came when his widow, Maria Bonilla, addressed the crowd gathered in Belmopan.

Fighting through grief, Maria spoke about the years of sacrifice her husband made to become a doctor and the lives he touched during his career.

“This is something that has been really hard,” she told supporters. “What makes me feel bad is that he took most of his life studying. He spent 14 years in this career in medicine and he just practiced almost seven years. He was just starting.”

Her remarks drew an emotional response from those in attendance as she reflected on the many patients who have approached her since her husband’s death.

“I know there’s a lot of people that he’s helped,” she said. “I have met a lot of people that tell me, ‘I am alive because of Dr. Bonilla.'”

Maria said she still struggles to understand how her husband’s life could be taken so suddenly after dedicating himself to helping others.

“I can’t believe how this person came and take out his life that way, so I just ask for justice and I think that we will get who did that to him.”

Area Representative Oscar Mira also addressed the gathering, which was organized to honor Dr. Bonilla’s memory and call for justice in the case.

For many at the rally, Maria Bonilla’s words captured both the pain of a grieving family and the determination to see those responsible brought before the courts.

Fourteen years of study. Nearly seven years of service. Countless lives impacted. And now a family searching for answers.
