By Belize Live News Staff: An official post-mortem examination conducted on Wednesday has shed light on the cause of death for 35-year-old Joel Sierra, the Santa Elena resident at the center of a chaotic and frightening shooting incident last Saturday.
According to official police reports, the autopsy certified Sierra’s cause of death as acute respiratory failure brought on by acute pulmonary edema. In medical terms, Sierra suffered from a rapid accumulation of fluid in his lungs, which ultimately prevented him from breathing properly and proved fatal.
The medical findings come as investigators work to piece together the bizarre timeline of Saturday’s events. On that day, Sierra allegedly began firing a firearm indiscriminately, causing widespread panic in the neighborhood before he was eventually subdued and subsequently passed away.
While the physical cause of the respiratory failure has been established, authorities are still waiting on critical toxicology results to provide a complete picture. Investigators strongly suspect that Sierra may have been under the influence of prohibited substances during the ordeal, which could have triggered or exacerbated the fatal medical crisis.
The toxicological screening is expected to determine whether any drugs were present in his system and what role, if any, they played in his erratic behavior and subsequent death.
The police department has confirmed that the case remains an active investigation as they await the final laboratory reports.
