By Belize Live News Staff: The debate over Belize’s National Health Insurance system is heating up after the UDP accused government of turning NHI into what they called “National Hustle Insurance.”
The opposition recently raised concerns that the proposed NHI bill includes provisions that could eventually require Belizeans to make contributions in order to access services. The criticism sparked a direct response from Prime Minister John Briceño.
According to Briceño, the opposition misunderstood the intent of the legislation. He explained that the current focus of NHI remains providing affordable primary healthcare services and stressed that Belizeans are not being asked to pay into the system at this time.
However, the Prime Minister acknowledged that future expansion of NHI services could eventually involve some level of public contribution, similar to healthcare systems used in other countries.
The issue is quickly becoming one of the country’s latest political battlegrounds.
