By Belize Live News Staff: The proposed National Health Insurance legislation is sparking major political debate after Opposition Leader Tracy Panton warned that Belizeans could eventually be required to make contributions into the healthcare system.
During a lengthy UDP press conference on Tuesday, Panton argued that the proposed NHI authority bill appears to create a contribution scheme similar to Social Security. She claimed Belizeans are being led to believe healthcare will remain “free,” while the legislation could eventually require payments from workers and even pensioners.
Panton also criticized the government’s handling of healthcare funding, saying many NHI contracts are reportedly being awarded to private providers while public healthcare services continue facing resource challenges.
According to the opposition leader, ordinary Belizean families are already struggling with food, fuel, rent and school expenses and should not face additional financial pressure.
Her remarks are likely to intensify national debate surrounding the future of Belize’s healthcare system.
