By Belize Live News Staff: A 13-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after a firearm reportedly failed to discharge during an attempted armed attack in Belize City on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on April 12 in the Mayflower Alley area, where the minor was walking from Lakeview Street toward his home when he was confronted by two masked men.
Police say both suspects were wearing ski masks when one of them pulled what appeared to be a grey 9mm pistol and pointed it directly at the boy. The suspect allegedly pulled the trigger, but the weapon malfunctioned and did not fire.
The minor, fearing for his life, immediately ran from the scene, escaping by climbing over a fence and making it safely back home without injuries.
The matter was reported to police later that evening, prompting an investigation. Officers visited the scene, recorded statements, and noted that surveillance cameras are in the area. Authorities are expected to review the footage as they work to identify the suspects.
No arrests have been made so far, and police continue their investigation into what could have been a deadly incident.
Residents in the area are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as police intensify efforts to track down those responsible.
