Of Course Government Cannot Add New Taxes, Belizeans Are Already Struggling

Editorial: BLN Staff

When you hear government proudly saying they have not introduced new taxes, some people clap. Some people cheer. Some people act like this is some great achievement.

Let’s be very clear.

Of course they cannot add new taxes.

Belizeans are already stretched to the limit.

The cost of living is high. Food prices are up. Fuel prices are rising. Rent is expensive. Utilities are not cheap. Businesses are struggling. Families are adjusting daily just to survive.

In that kind of environment, adding new taxes would not just be bad policy. It would be economic punishment.

So let’s stop pretending this is generosity. It is necessity.

Government says they inherited a crisis. That may be true. They say debt was high. That may also be true. They say they had to stabilize the economy. Fine.

But none of that changes the reality Belizeans are living today.

You cannot talk about “no new taxes” while people are already drowning under existing costs.

Because here is what matters.

Even without new taxes, Belizeans are paying more.

Fuel prices are up.
Food prices are up.
Everyday expenses are up.

That is the real tax.

Inflation is a silent tax. High fuel costs are a tax. High utility bills are a tax. Expensive food is a tax.

So when government says they did not add new taxes, Belizeans should ask a simple question.

Why does life still feel more expensive?

Because the burden is still there.

And here is where Belizeans must stop cheering nonsense.

In a time when people are struggling, the focus should not be on celebrating what government did not do. It should be on what government is actively doing to lower the cost of living.

Where is the aggressive action on fuel prices?
Where is the reform to reduce banking costs?
Where is the push to make food production cheaper?
Where is the strategy to lower electricity costs?

That is what matters.

Not adding new taxes is not a victory. It is the bare minimum.

A real victory would be Belizeans feeling relief in their pockets.

A real victory would be lower costs.
More opportunity.
A stronger private sector.

Government says governing is hard. Of course it is.

But Belizeans are not grading government on effort. They are living with the results.

And the result right now is simple.

Life is still expensive.

So no, Belizeans should not be celebrating the absence of new taxes as if it is some major achievement.

That is like applauding someone for not making your situation worse, while your situation is already difficult.

Belize deserves more than that.
