By Belize Live News Staff: The relocation of the La Ruta Maya finish line is not only stirring public debate but also raising concerns among longtime race-day vendors.
For decades, vendors have relied on the traditional Belize City finish to sell food and local delicacies. With the race now ending at the Grand Resort near Haulover Bridge, questions remain about how vendors will be accommodated.
Organizers say vendors will be allowed to operate under similar conditions as other race stops. However, frustrations have grown over increasing stall fees and additional permit requirements.
The Forest Department has confirmed that vendors selling game meat must now obtain a one-hundred-dollar dealer’s permit and comply with closed season regulations.
Some longtime vendors argue that rising fees and stricter enforcement are cutting into already tight profit margins, especially with increasing food costs.
Traffic concerns have also surfaced, as the Haulover Bridge is a major gateway into Belize City. Organizers say traffic management will be handled by the appropriate authorities.
While race officials frame the move as necessary for safety and long-term success, critics say the changes risk eroding the tradition and community spirit that built the race’s legacy.
