By Belize Live News Staff: A major legal fight is now underway following the deaths of three American tourists in Belize, after the families of the victims filed a federal lawsuit against Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro.
The families made the announcement at a press conference in Massachusetts, stating that while they cannot bring their loved ones back, they intend to ensure those responsible are held accountable and that similar tragedies are prevented.
Attorney Tom Scolaro, who is representing the families, argued that the incident was not a random accident but a preventable disaster. He said the deaths were the foreseeable outcome of decisions that placed profits ahead of safety.
The lawsuit names the resort and linked companies, including the developers and contractors, along with Expedia.
Scolaro warned that the defendants may attempt to move the case to Belize, where wrongful death compensation is far more limited. He noted that in Belize, awards are typically restricted to economic loss and could result in little to no damages.
The families say their push in court is about justice, accountability, and ensuring proper safety measures are enforced so that no other family experiences the same heartbreak.
