By Belize Live News Staff: A rare jaguarundi was struck and killed yesterday along the TV Ramos Highway, close to Hopkins Junction, according to reports.
The incident is believed to have occurred when the animal attempted to cross the roadway and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The jaguarundi was later found dead near the edge of the highway.
Jaguarundis are elusive and play an important role in the ecosystem. Their deaths due to traffic accidents highlight the growing conflict between wildlife and expanding road networks.
Authorities have not indicated whether the incident was reported to environmental officials.
