By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s border security capabilities have received a major upgrade with the rollout of the Biometric Data Sharing Partnership, which introduces advanced fingerprint-based screening at ports of entry nationwide.
The system allows Immigration Officers to conduct on-the-spot biometric scans when deeper verification is required, particularly in cases involving suspected altered or fraudulent travel documents. Officers can now confirm identities within minutes, replacing lengthy manual checks and external communications.
US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Katharine Beamer described the initiative as a reflection of the strong partnership between Belize and the United States. She noted that the program includes approximately US$250,000 in biometric security equipment funded by the US State Department.
Chief Executive Officer Tanya Santos emphasized that the system strengthens Belize’s institutional capacity and supports an intelligence-driven approach to border management. She added that the initiative aligns with Belize’s long-term national security priorities.
The Biometric Data Sharing Partnership is currently being deployed across major ports of entry and is expected to be fully operational in the coming months.
