Mangrove search yields rifles, ammunition, and body armor

By Belize Live News Staff: An intelligence-driven police operation has resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms and ammunition hidden in a mangrove area within Belize City.

Police say officers from the Special Branch and Precinct Two conducted a targeted search in the Lake Independence area, where they discovered a cache of weapons concealed in the mangrove bush off Nutmeg Street. Among the items recovered were an AR-15 rifle, two drum magazines, over one hundred rounds of 5.56 ammunition, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, and two bulletproof vests.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith explained that the items were confiscated and classified as found property. She added that the seizure contributes to the department’s ongoing efforts to curb gun violence and prevent illegal firearms from circulating within communities.

Police statistics show that for the year 2025, a total of 224 firearms have been seized. Investigations remain ongoing, and police continue to urge the public to share information that may assist in removing illegal weapons from the streets.
