By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic is mourning the loss of a young female howler monkey that succumbed to severe injuries and infection after being rescued with an advanced screw-worm infestation. The clinic announced that the monkey arrived in critical condition, suffering from hypothermia and deep traumatic wounds that placed her at immediate risk of organ failure.
BWRC veterinarians reported that her body temperature had fallen dangerously low, and screw-worm larvae had already reached late developmental stages on her spine, causing profound tissue damage. Despite aggressive treatment, her condition quickly worsened due to complications including pneumonia and emphysema.
The clinic emphasized that while her passing is heartbreaking, she did not leave this world alone or in pain. She spent her final hours warm, medicated, and comforted by caretakers who fought tirelessly for her recovery.
In a message to supporters, BWRC thanked those who sent prayers and encouragement, noting that the young monkey’s story is a reminder of the ongoing threats wildlife face, and the critical need for rescue work and public awareness.
