By Belize Live News Staff: A taxi driver from Xaibe Village was detained early Sunday morning after police say he was found driving with an alcohol concentration above the legal limit during a routine vehicular checkpoint in northern Belize. The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on November 23rd, during a four-hour operation conducted along the Philip Goldson Highway.
Officers reported that the driver, 24-year-old Lorenzo Nas, was screened after showing signs of intoxication. He was subsequently arrested and charged for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. Authorities say he was cautioned following the charge and chose to remain silent.
The checkpoint, conducted between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., was part of ongoing national efforts targeting drunk driving, illegal firearms, drugs, uncustomed goods, and other criminal activity. Approximately 30 vehicles were inspected, and four additional drivers received traffic violation tickets for offences including expired licenses, defective lights, and failure to wear seat belts.
Police say aside from the arrest and citations, the operation concluded peacefully. Officials continue to stress that early-morning checkpoints are a key part of highway safety enforcement, especially during weekends when impaired driving incidents typically increase.
