By Belize Live News Staff: A joint Special Branch operation uncovered a major cannabis stash early this morning in Orange Walk Town.
Around 4:45 a.m., a team searched an empty lot inside the Mount Calvary Cemetery on Cemetery Street.
The officers combed through several rows of tombs, focusing on areas where the soil appeared freshly disturbed.
During the search, they located multiple packages wrapped and concealed between the tomb structures. When the contents were inspected, the packages were confirmed to contain 33 kilograms of cannabis.
The discovery is considered a significant seizure, especially given the unusual location where the drugs were hidden.
Investigators believe the cemetery was selected because of its quiet surroundings during nighttime hours, making it an easy spot for quick drop-offs.
The area has since been photographed and documented, and the cannabis was secured and removed from the location for processing.
The team continued to canvas the surrounding grounds for additional evidence and footprints that may help identify who placed the drugs there.
No individuals were found at the scene, and no arrests have yet been made.
The search was part of a wider morning operation covering several parts of the Orange Walk District.
