Belize’s weather alert: widespread rain and thunder heading our way

By Belize Live News Staff: After today’s breezy calm, Thursday’s weather will turn significantly wetter as moisture builds across the country. The National Meteorological Service warns that a broad area of instability will keep skies mostly cloudy, with outbreaks of showers, thunderstorms, and periods of rain, especially over northern and central Belize.

Forecaster Catherine Cumberbatch explains that the change is linked to lingering cool air interacting with a moist onshore flow, fueling strong convection. Belizeans can expect thunder, lightning, and heavy downpours, particularly overnight and through the early hours of Thursday.

The Marine Forecast continues to show rough sea conditions with waves of 6 to 8 feet, and north-northwest winds at 10–20 knots. Small craft operators are once again advised to remain in port or proceed with caution.

Although no tropical cyclone development is expected in the North Atlantic or Caribbean for several days, the threat of localized flooding remains due to persistent rain over already saturated ground. Rural and low-lying communities, especially in the Belize District, Orange Walk, and Corozal, should stay alert.

Daytime temperatures will remain mild with highs of 77°F (25°C) along the coast and 78°F (26°C) inland. Overnight lows will range from 63°F (17°C) inland to 68°F (20°C) along the coast.

Authorities are reminding the public to avoid flooded roads and monitor official weather updates, particularly those traveling on the Philip Goldson and George Price highways, where visibility may be reduced during heavy rainfall.
