By Belize Live News Staff: A promising step toward sustainable agriculture and economic diversification was realized this week with the launch of two tilapia culture tanks at Chunox St. Viator Vocational High School, thanks to the Ministry of Investment and its partners.
The initiative, part of the Regional Economic Development Master Plan for the Corozal District, aims to boost food security and create new economic opportunities for northern Belize.
The tanks, constructed entirely from materials sourced in Belize, are capable of producing 300 tilapia in five months, offering a replicable model for small-scale aquaculture.
As part of the project, 13 students underwent hands-on training in tilapia farming techniques, earning certification in tilapia husbandry. The program not only equips young Belizeans with valuable technical skills but also promotes environmentally responsible food production.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key government and education leaders, including Florencio Marin Jr., Mr. Lincoln Blake, Mr. Michael Sosa, and representatives from St. Viator High School and Caracol Architectural Designs.
The Ministry highlighted that initiatives like this align with the broader national strategy to strengthen local enterprise, enhance food sustainability, and encourage Belizean-led innovation in agriculture.
