What Belize can learn from Denmark’s empathy-based education system

What Belize can learn from Denmark’s empathy-based education system

By Belize Live News Staff: Forget test scores, Denmark has been topping the charts where it matters most: happiness. For years, it’s ranked among the world’s happiest nations, and one of its biggest secrets is found not in economics or politics, but in the classroom.

In Danish schools, empathy isn’t just encouraged, it’s required. Since 1993, children have taken part in a weekly empathy class, “Klassens tid,” where they discuss problems, celebrate each other’s strengths, and learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

There’s no competition, no gold medals, no first-place ribbons, just teamwork, respect, and self-improvement. Danish students learn early that success is about lifting others up, not tearing them down.

For Belize, it’s a powerful lesson. As we face issues like bullying, crime, and social division, maybe it’s time to make empathy a core part of education. Imagine classrooms where kids learn not just facts and formulas, but kindness, cooperation, and confidence — skills that last a lifetime.

If Denmark can create one of the world’s happiest societies by teaching empathy, Belize can too. Because a happier nation doesn’t start in government — it starts in school.
