By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture and Immigration, has dispatched humanitarian relief supplies to Belizean students studying in Jamaica, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The initiative will assist approximately 75 Belizean students, providing essential personal hygiene items and canned food supplies. The first shipment was sent aboard a Jamaica Defence Force aircraft, which had been granted safe harbour in Belize during the hurricane’s passage.
The relief effort is being led by Ms. Elecif Arthurs, Belize’s Honorary Consul in Kingston, who is overseeing the distribution of supplies to the affected students. The Government has also extended support to Belizean students in Santiago de Cuba, coordinated by the Embassy of Belize in Havana.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francis Fonseca, conveyed Belize’s appreciation to the Government of Jamaica for its compassion and support during and after the storm.
“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Jamaica for their care and support to our students during Hurricane Melissa. Belize remains committed to ensuring their well-being and stands in solidarity with Jamaica during its recovery,” the Minister said.
The Ministry confirmed that all Belizean students in Jamaica and Cuba are safe, accounted for, and in good condition. The Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Belizeans abroad and maintaining strong regional cooperation in times of crisis.
