Melissa’s 175 mph winds make it the most powerful hurricane to impact Jamaica, Belize remains vigilant

By Belize Live News Staff: Melissa remains a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph. To put that into perspective, winds in the upper-right quadrant of the storm are equivalent to those of an EF4 tornado.

Meteorologists confirm that Melissa is now the strongest hurricane ever recorded to impact Jamaica, bringing devastating winds, torrential rainfall, and widespread destruction across the island.

Regional forecasters are warning nearby nations—including Belize—to remain on alert as the system continues to move westward across the Caribbean.

While the storm’s core is expected to stay south of Belize, authorities are advising residents and mariners to monitor weather updates closely for potential heavy rainfall, high surf, and rough seas in the coming days.
