By Belize Live News Staff: Tech giant OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has unveiled its first web browser, called Atlas, officially entering a market long dominated by Google Chrome and Apple Safari.
The move could reshape how people across the world, including Belize, search for information online, as Atlas combines traditional web browsing with artificial intelligence to deliver direct answers rather than a list of links.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Atlas as a “once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be.” The browser includes an “agent mode” that can automatically search the internet on a user’s behalf, summarize information, and explain how it found the results, a feature that blurs the line between web browsing and AI assistance.
Analysts say the launch places OpenAI in direct competition with Google, which has more than 3 billion Chrome users worldwide. Chrome’s success once seemed unshakable, but experts believe advances in AI are already reshaping the tech landscape.
For Belizeans, this could mean a new era of faster and smarter online searching, especially for students, journalists, and small business owners who rely on digital research. However, concerns remain over privacy, data collection, and the risk of misinformation, especially since AI-generated responses are not always accurate.
Altman said he believes chatbots will replace traditional search bars, marking a fundamental change in how people use the internet.
