By Belize Live News Staff: Church Senator Louis M. Wade Jr. has joined growing calls for reform of Belize’s bail laws, arguing that granting bail to repeat offenders in violent crimes has contributed to preventable tragedies.
Responding to recent comments by Special Envoy Mrs. Rossana Briceño, Wade said he stands in full agreement that the system’s leniency toward abusers puts victims at risk.
“When an abuser is granted bail despite a record of violence, and when victims’ pleas are not treated with urgency, the system itself becomes a part of the problem,” Briceño had said. Wade called the statement “spot on” and added that, as a senator, he would support amendments to the Bail Act.
Wade described the situation as a “system failure”, highlighting cases like those of alleged serial offenders who reoffended while out on bail. “Bail is not a right,” he said, urging lawmakers to act swiftly to protect victims of domestic violence.
The Church Senator’s remarks add to growing national pressure on the government and judiciary to address systemic weaknesses in handling violent crime, especially those linked to domestic abuse.
