By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities in China are investigating a serious mid-air incident involving an Air China flight that was forced to make an emergency landing after a lithium battery ignited inside a passenger’s carry-on bag. The sudden blaze broke out in the overhead compartment, filling part of the cabin with smoke and alarming passengers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported thanks to the quick response of the cabin crew.
Witnesses said flight attendants reacted immediately after noticing the smoke, retrieving fire extinguishers and containing the flames before they spread. The pilots declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to the nearest airport, where it landed safely under emergency protocol. Emergency response teams were waiting on the runway to assist upon arrival.
Air China confirmed that the burning item was traced to a lithium battery, though it remains unclear whether it was part of a power bank, electronic device, or spare cell. Investigators are now working to determine the exact cause of the ignition and whether the battery was properly declared or packaged according to aviation safety standards.
Incidents involving lithium batteries have become a growing concern for airlines around the world. While these batteries power most modern devices, including phones and laptops, they can overheat or ignite if damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme conditions. Airlines have long prohibited spare lithium batteries in checked luggage due to fire risks.
Aviation experts are calling for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and enhanced passenger education on handling these batteries during air travel.
