Over $1 billion in assets; Belize’s credit unions celebrate a prosperous future

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize joined the rest of the world in marking International Credit Union Day, and this year, the celebration carries extra meaning at home as the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL) commemorates its 77th anniversary of service to the nation. The League’s Monitoring and Compliance Officer, Jacqueline Taibo, reflected on the legacy of Belize’s credit unions and their role in building financial security for thousands of citizens.

Taibo noted that Belize now has eight credit unions serving over 160,000 members and managing more than $1 billion in assets, a clear sign of the cooperative movement’s strength. “Credit unions have been operating in Belize for over 70 years,” she said. “They are stable financial institutions, and it’s a good place for Belizeans to have their savings. Today, we celebrate our achievements, show appreciation to our members, and look back on our history.”

This year’s theme, “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” underscores the global credit union movement’s emphasis on unity, inclusion, and shared growth. In that spirit, the Belize Credit Union League will host a special weekend of activities centered on professional development, cooperation, and community engagement.

Taibo explained that the event will include several impactful sessions: Dr. Dionne Chamberlain will discuss diversity and inclusion in the workplace, highlighting how cooperation within organizations strengthens success. Corrine Fuller-Robinson will speak about financial inclusion and bridging gaps for the underserved, while Anne-Marie Williams will explore cooperation across society and the challenges faced by those struggling to access financial services. Fuller will also address cooperation across international borders, emphasizing Belize’s ties to the World Council of Credit Unions and the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions.

The event will wrap up with a health segment featuring the Kidney Association of Belize and Dr. Gongora, followed by an award ceremony and cocktail reception. The convention takes place on Saturday, October 18, at the Caribbean Motors showroom in Belize City, where the League will bring together staff, executives, and partners for a day of celebration and collaboration.
