Belize doctors gather for 42nd annual medical and dental congress

By  Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s doctors and medical professionals are gathering this week for the 42nd Annual Medical and Dental Congress, organized by the Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA), to share knowledge, learn about emerging health issues, and explore the latest in medical technology. The event, which brings together over 300 local and international participants, serves as an annual forum for collaboration, reflection, and professional growth within the nation’s healthcare sector.

Dr. Jorge Polanco, Director of Hospital Services at the Ministry of Health, described the congress as a cornerstone of continuous education. “It’s an opportunity for specialists from Belize and abroad to exchange information that enhances the quality of care for everyone,” he explained. “Topics this year range from cardiovascular health to radiation safety and maternal care, providing something of value for every practitioner.”

Dr. Perlita Aldana, President of the BMDA, praised Belize’s growing medical community for its commitment to professional excellence. “Over the years, our local doctors have gained significant experience, and these conferences help bridge our work at home with global medical standards,” she said. “We have presenters from Belize, the U.S., Cuba, Nicaragua, and international organizations like PAHO—all contributing to the shared goal of better healthcare.”

Among the featured presenters, Dr. Natalia Largaespada Beer of the Ministry of Health and Wellness discussed maternal mortality trends, noting a temporary rise during the COVID-19 pandemic but reaffirming Belize’s commitment to reducing those numbers. “We’re focusing on the social and community factors that impact women’s health,” she stated, adding that collaboration between health institutions and communities is crucial for lasting change.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ramon Yacab, Vice President of the BMDA, said the congress allows Belizean professionals to stay on par with regional and international standards. “We’re learning, exchanging ideas, and improving our role in tackling diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and maternal health challenges,” he said.
