By Belize Live News Staff: A 37-year-old father of two from August Pine Ridge is in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) after being struck by a fuel tanker truck on Friday evening.
The victim has been identified as Ronny Castellanos, who sustained severe head and body injuries when he was knocked off his bicycle inside his village. His wife and sister say he has remained unconscious and on life support since the crash.
According to his sister, Mirrea Castellanos, the family was called to the scene around 6:15 p.m. “They told us he had trauma, and he was rushed to KHMH. He’s still in a very critical condition,” she told reporters. Doctors are now awaiting CT scan results to determine if emergency neck surgery can be performed.
His wife, Reina Castellanos, shared that police have spoken with them but provided little information. “Ronny hasn’t woken up since Friday. We don’t know what will happen if he doesn’t wake up,” she said, visibly emotional.
Police have confirmed that the Orange Walk CIB located the truck and driver believed to be involved. The driver, 53-year-old Roberto Polanco, has been detained, given a urine sample test, and served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.
Reina is now appealing to the public for financial help to cover her husband’s medical scans and care. “I have two kids. I have no money for the CT scan or anything. I just need help,” she said.
