Government of Belize rejects false claims of 70 drug plane landings

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, is refuting recent media reports that allege that “at least 70 drug planes landed in Belize between 2020 and 2021.”

According to the Ministry, the claim reportedly attributed to leaked foreign sources is not supported by the official data compiled and verified by Belizean authorities. The official records show that in 2018, there were 12 landings, in 2019, there were 9 landings, in 2020, there were 10 landings, and in 2021, there were 15 landings. This confirms that only 25 illegal landings occurred during 2020–2021, far below the 70 being circulated.

Authorities say all illegal landings are recorded, verified, and reported in coordination with regional and international partners. Figures are based on law enforcement reports, on-the-ground investigations, and interagency monitoring. The Ministry notes that inflated and unverified claims undermine public confidence and misrepresent the efforts of Belizean security agencies.

The Government highlighted a steady decline in drug plane landings in recent years. In 2022, there were 7 recorded incidents, in 2023, only 2, in 2024, there were 3, and so far in 2025, only 2 incidents have been reported. Officials attribute the drop to Belize’s multi-agency strategy, which includes enhanced air surveillance, interdictive operations, and cooperation with international allies.

“The Government of Belize reaffirms its role as a responsible partner in regional and hemispheric security. We remain committed to countering transnational organized crime, strengthening airspace monitoring, and protecting our borders and communities,” the Ministry said.

Authorities are urging media outlets and commentators to rely on verified official data when reporting on sensitive national security matters.
