Western Dairies denies racism allegations after firing of four Garifuna women

By Belize Live News Staff: Western Dairies is under fire after four Garifuna women went public with claims that their dismissal from the Dangriga branch was racially motivated.

The women said they had each worked with the company for about a year without issues before a new manager took over. They allege they were mistreated and unfairly fired last week, presenting termination letters that gave no reason for the decision.

The controversy grew after DYFA Garifuna Radio 91.7FM aired a livestream on Saturday, during which the women spoke about their experiences. Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano, who joined the broadcast, pledged to raise the matter with the company’s management.

Western Dairies responded with a press release on Sunday, firmly denying the allegations. The company said the firings were based on business decisions and were not related to race, ethnicity, or discrimination.

It also highlighted its long history in Belize, noting that since its founding in 1967, it has become a trusted national brand employing over 230 Belizeans of various ethnicities across the country.

Western Dairies stressed that only four employees were affected in Dangriga and insisted this did not qualify as a “mass firing.” The company reiterated its commitment to strengthening services in Dangriga and nationwide.
