Belize rejects Guatemala’s “Alternative Facts” on Sarstoon incidents

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has flatly rejected claims made by the Republic of Guatemala regarding recent incidents at the Sarstoon River between September 10 and 13, 2025. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belize condemned Guatemala’s attempt to distort the facts, reaffirming that the Sarstoon Island and the mid-channel of the river lie squarely within Belizean territory as established by the 1859 Treaty.

Belize emphasized that the treaty provides both nations equal access to the river while maintaining that the island is within Belize’s sovereign domain. Officials underscored that Guatemala’s claim remains before the International Court of Justice, and both countries are obligated to refrain from actions that could worsen the dispute.

The government strongly refuted Guatemala’s allegation that the Belize Defence Force acted provocatively, pointing to video evidence that demonstrates the professionalism and restraint of Belize’s military personnel. The statement highlighted that these actions reflect Belize’s pride in its armed forces.

Amid rising tensions, Belize stressed the urgency of finalizing a bilateral mechanism for cooperation in the Sarstoon and surrounding maritime spaces to ensure peace and security. The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Guatemala on the foundation of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
