By Belize Live News Staff: Belizean national Ellis Meighan, who had been wanted by the Belize Police Department is now back in the country to face justice.
This morning, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents escorted Meighan to the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA), where he was handed over under tight security to Belizean officials.
Police say Meighan fled Belize while facing criminal charges and entered the United States illegally, where he was later detained.
In April 2024, Meighan was implicated in the murder of 32-year-old Roy Lee Burgess, who was gunned down on the Placencia Road near Mile 22. Witness Maia James also came under fire during the incident, suffering injuries.
After the shooting, Meighan reportedly escaped by getting into a waiting vehicle. He later fled to the U.S., sought asylum, and was held on immigration violations. The Belize Police Department issued a wanted poster, and Interpol Belize worked with U.S. counterparts to secure his return.
Officials confirm that Meighan is now in custody and will be processed for the charges against him.
