By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has recorded a total of 527 confirmed cases of New World Screwworm infestations up to Week 36 of 2025, according to official data.
The majority of cases were reported in the Toledo District, which registered 264 cases, followed by Cayo with 173. Orange Walk (31), Stann Creek (30), Belize (22), and Corozal (7) recorded far fewer infections, but health authorities remain on alert.
Canines were the most affected species, accounting for over half of all cases at 268. Bovine animals followed with 121 cases, while porcine (60), equine (36), and ovine (26) cases were also documented. Wildlife, including howler monkeys, were not spared. Even human cases have been recorded, though in very small numbers.
Officials are urging pet owners, livestock farmers, and rural households to monitor their animals closely for signs of infestation and seek immediate treatment. The Ministry of Agriculture and BAHA continue to lead the surveillance and control efforts to prevent further spread.
